When and who was launched the PM WANI Wi-Fi Scheme ?

This scheme was launched by our Prime Minister Shri. Narendra Modi in the month of December, year 2020.

What are the main Objectives or Aims of Launching PM WANI Wi-Fi Scheme?

The PM WANI WI-Fi scheme was introduced and its primary focus was to create Employment and Business Opportunities and to increase  internet access at very low cost across the country with the help of Wi-Fi Hotspots and also to strengthen our digital India mission.

What is the Framework of PM WANI Wi-Fi Scheme ?

The WANI framework contains the following components:

1 - Public Data Office (PDO): It will establish, maintain and operate only WANI compliant Wi-Fi Access Points and deliver broadband services to subscribers.

2 - Public Data Office Aggregator (PDOA): It will be an aggregator of PDOs and perform the functions relating to Authorization and Accounting.

3 - App Provider: It will develop an App to register users and discover WANI compliant Wi-Fi hotspots in the nearby area and display the same within the App for accessing the internet service.

4 - Central Registry: It will maintain the details of App Providers, PDOAs, and PDOs. To begin with, the Central Registry will be maintained by C-DoT.

WORKFLOW OF PM WANI SCHEME

The scheme shall work in the following manner:

 1. Any entity desirous of becoming a PDO sets up a Wi-Fi access point by purchasing network services from a service provider. 

2. The PDO registers with a PDOA that is registered on the App. 

3. Now, any potential user in the vicinity of a Wi-Fi access point, after registering and authenticating themself on the App, selects a PDO to connect to. 

4. This request is sent to the relevant PDOA who, after authenticating the user, will display tariff plans to the user. 

5. Once the payment has been made to the PDOA, the PDOA registers the user and provides them with the requisite Wi-Fi access.
